How to Apply – Steps 1-6 

STEP 1:   Review Grantmaking Guidelines
(Eligibility Quiz)

Organization Requirements. For your organization to be considered for a grant, you must be able to answer " yes" to all of the following five statements:

• My organization is tax-exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or is a government or public agency (city, state, public school district).

• My organization is not a private foundation as defined in Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.

• My organization had total revenues of at least $100,000 for the preceding year.

• My organization must provide a copy of a current financial audit conducted by an independent certified public accountant.

• In policy and practice, my organization offers opportunity and service to all, regardless of age, race, creed, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation and ethnicity.

Project Requirements. The next set of screening statements is designed to determine if there is a potential match between your proposed project and T he Skillman Foundation’s grantmaking goals.

• The project is aligned with the Foundation’s Good Schools and Good Neighborhoods strategies or is a fit with Good Opportunities.

• My project serves children and families in the City of Detroit with a focus on the following neighborhoods: Brightmoor, Central/Northend, Chadsey/Condon, Cody Rouge, Osborn and Southwest Detroit Neighborhoods. Or my project engages in public policy and advocacy for children and families on a state-wide and local level.

• The proposed project has a component for evaluating its effectiveness.

STEP 2: Review What the Foundation Does Not Fund

What We Do Not Fund. The Foundation does not make grants to:

• Individuals
• For-profit institutions
• Endowments, building campaigns, or capital costs, including construction, renovation, or equipment
• Political campaigns, to support political activities or to lobby for or against particular pieces of legislation
• Award scholarships or provide tuition assistance

STEP 3:  Print a Copy of the Working Draft Grant Inquiry Template

Click on the links to view and print working draft templates of the online version. These templates will help you to prepare your Grant Inquiry and required attachments. However, please note that you may not upload and submit these completed working draft templates.Download the Grant Inquiry Form and Grant Inquiry Budget below.

STEP 4:  Begin Your Online Grant Inquiry

Click on the link to the Foundation’s online Grant Inquiry form: https://www.GrantRequest.com/SID_441?SA=SNA&FID=35019

Set Up Your Account. You will be prompted to set up an account with your email address as your login. Please establish a password. Please remember to write down your account login and password.

Enter your organization’s U.S. tax ID number. You will be prompted to enter your tax identification number. Click on the link http://www.eri-nonprofit-salaries.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=NPO.Search if you do not know your organization’s tax identification number.

Online eligibility quiz. After login you will be invited to take a brief online eligibility quiz to determine if your organization and project meet The Skillman Foundation’s guidelines. (See Step 1).

STEP 5:  Submit Your Attachments

On the final page of the online Grant Inquiry form, you will be asked to upload the following attachments:

Attachment Checklist
1. Grant Inquiry Cover Letter
2. Grant Inquiry Project Narrative Questions (Foundation template provided)
3. Grant Inquiry Project Budget (Foundation template provided)
4. Recent Audited Financial Statement

File Types. The maximum size of all file attachments together is 25 megabytes.  Please note that attached documents can only be in one of the following four file types with the file extension (if applicable) showing below in parenthesis:

• Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx)
• Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (.xls or .xlsx)
• Adobe Acrobat PDF file (.pdf)
• Rich Text Format (.rtf)

STEP 6:  Submit Your Online Grant Inquiry

You will receive an e-mail confirmation that we have received your Grant Inquiry. Please do not mail a duplicate hard copy, any additional attachments, binders, books, CDs, DVDs, videotapes or audiotapes.
