Young Men of Color Grants

The Skillman Foundation visited the dire plight of today’s Black and Brown boys of Detroit when it hosted two Boys of Color: Perilous Times symposiums in 2011. The programs focused specifically on the African-American and Latino communities because Detroit’s young men of color are in a crisis of epic proportions. The first of a series of community conversations centered around ideas and ways in which the community can help to remove some of the obstacles facing these young men.

A solid collaboration of African-American and Latino organizations, foundations and colleges has joined forces to peer into the lives of this demographic. We want to make sure conversations around issues of incarceration, education attainment, employment and the impact of immigration, among other things, to identify ways to clear the path for success, continue to be a hot topic.

Spearheaded by The Skillman Foundation and following the success of the events, the Foundation also wanted to lend a hand to those who are on the ground attempting to make a difference in their communities by offering up to $1,000 grants, which are to support activity designed for Detroit males from ages 11-18 who are African American or Latino, and who have something in common, such as school, neighborhood, faith community, special interests or talents.
